Top 3 Players who can replace Virat Kohli at no.4 in Test Cricket

Whispers of Virat Kohli’s potential retirement from Test cricket have stirred the Indian cricketing world, with speculations that he may soon shift focus to other formats or personal pursuits. Over the years, Kohli has been the backbone of India’s batting lineup with over 9000 runs in tests. He has excelled in challenging SENA conditions—South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia—and played a key role in historic achievements, such as the 2018–19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy win.

Now at 36 and facing a dip in form, averaging just 24.52 in 2024, the urgency to identify his successor at No. 4 is growing. Fortunately, India’s deep talent pool offers several promising candidates to step into the role and fill the significant void Kohli would leave behind. Let’s explore top three such names,

Here are the top 3 players who can replace Virat Kohli:

3. Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer, 30, brings valuable Test experience, having scored 811 runs in 14 matches at an average of 36.86. His century on debut against New Zealand in 2021 and some consistent performances in subcontinental conditions highlight his capabilities. Known for his aggressive stroke play, Iyer fits the mold of a dynamic middle-order batter in the Kohli mold. However, recurring injuries and inconsistent form have disrupted his momentum. A strong domestic campaign could put him back in contention for a long-term role in the Test side.

2. Dhruv Jurel

Dhruv Jurel, 24, is another emerging talent who could grow into the role, despite primarily being a wicketkeeper. With 1,223 runs in 21 First-Class innings at an average of 48.92, Jurel made a mark in his 2024 Test debut against England with a gritty 90. His calm temperament and adaptability have drawn comparisons to Kohli’s resilience. While he is currently seen as a keeper-batter, his solid technique and temperament suggest he could transition into a specialist batting role, making him a potential dark horse for the No. 4.

1. Sarfaraz Khan

Sarfaraz Khan, 27, stands out as a strong contender to succeed Kohli at No. 4. With 4,593 runs in 82 First-Class innings at an exceptional average of 65.61 including 16 centuries, he has been a dominant force in domestic cricket. His impressive 2024 Test debut against England, where he scored a brisk 62 followed by a century against New Zealand, showcased his ability to handle both spin and pace with confidence. Sarfaraz’s hunger for runs and naturally aggressive style echo Kohli’s intensity, though he still needs to prove himself in overseas conditions, particularly in SENA nations.
