Fans on Twitter reacted after Afghanistan knocked England out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Hashmatullah Shahidi-led beat the Three Lions by 8 runs at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Wednesday to 317 to stay alive in the tournament.

Opting to bat, Afghanistan had a poor start to their innings as their top order struggled against the raw pace of Mark Wood and Jofra Archer, who picked three wickets in the powerplay, leaving the opposition tottering at 39 for three inside 9 overs.

However, Ibrahim Zadran (177) came up with a gigantic effort as he, along with skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (40), led the rescue charge, adding 103 runs for the fourth wicket. After the captain was back in the hut, Azmatullah Omarzai (41) joined hands with opener Zadran as they together put on 72 runs.

Mohammad Nabi (40) also played a brutal hand, but the main hero of the team was Zadran. He slammed a sensational century and ended up hitting the highest-ever individual score in ICC Champions Trophy history. Thanks to his brilliant effort with the bat, Afghanistan posted a massive total of 325/7.

Phil Salt (19) was the first wicket for England to fall in the chase and the pressure on them got even more when Jamie Smith (9) also perished as well, finding themselves at 30 for two. But Ben Duckett (38), along with Joe Root (120), rescued the team with their 68-run stand.

Harry Brook (25) had a decent start but he couldn’t carry on as England was reduced to 133 for four. Skipper Jos Buttler (38) kept providing great support to Joe Root as they stitched 83 runs for the fourth wicket.

After the captain was back in the hut, Root slammed a magnificent century and was looking all set to take his team home. But Azmatullah Omarzai oozed his class with the ball, picking fifer. He also removed Jamie Overton (32) as Afghanistan ended England’s innings on 317 to win the game by eight runs.
