Former English captain takes charge as new head coach of England Women’s cricket

The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has made a significant decision in the world of women’s cricket by appointing former captain as the head coach of the England Women’s Team. This announcement comes at a crucial time as the team gears up for the ICC Women’s World Cup later this year. With over 300 international appearances and a storied career that includes two World Cups and five Ashes victories, Edwards brings a wealth of experience and passion to her new role.

A homecoming for a cricketing legend

Charlotte Edwards, at 45 years old, is not just stepping into a coaching role; she is returning to a position of leadership that she once held as captain for a decade. Her emotional response to the appointment in a media release reflects her deep connection with the team.

“I am so delighted to once again be part of the leadership of the England Women’s cricket team, and I cannot wait to take this team forward and drive us to success,” Edwards stated. This sentiment resonates with many who remember her as one of the greatest players in women’s cricket history.

Edwards’ journey from player to coach has been marked by notable achievements. Since retiring in 2017, she has built an impressive coaching resume, leading teams across various leagues worldwide. Her successful stints with the Southern Vipers, Southern Brave, Sydney Sixers, and Mumbai Indians have established her as a formidable force in women’s cricket coaching. Under her guidance, the Vipers won multiple domestic trophies, while Mumbai Indians clinched titles in India’s Women’s Premier League.

Facing challenges head-on

Edwards’ first challenge as head coach will be leading the team in a T20 International against West Indies on May 21 at Canterbury. This match marks the beginning of a busy schedule that includes two home summer series followed by the ICC Women’s World Cup in India this autumn. The stakes are high, and Edwards acknowledges this pressure, “We have such a talented group of players, and I am excited about working with them and improving them both as individuals and as a team,” she added.

The recent performance of the England Women’s team has raised concerns among fans and officials alike. Following a disappointing 16-0 whitewash against Australia in the Ashes series, there is an urgent need for revitalization within the squad. Edwards’ appointment comes after Jon Lewis’ resignation, and many believe she is the right person to bring about this much-needed change.

Building on her own legacy

Edwards’ legacy as a player is well-established; she represented England over 300 times, winning two World Cups and lifting the Ashes five times during her illustrious 20-year career. Now, she aims to build upon this legacy as a coach. Clare Connor, Managing Director of England Women’s cricket, praised Edwards as a “proven winner” with “the experience, passion, and expertise to lead this team to success“.

This new chapter for Edwards is not just about winning trophies; it is also about fostering an environment where players can thrive both individually and collectively. Her coaching philosophy emphasizes empathy and understanding, which has proven effective in her previous roles. As she prepares for her first series in charge, it is clear that her approach will focus on creating a supportive yet challenging atmosphere for her players.
