Jason Gillespie vs Pakistan Cricket Board: Controversy erupts regarding unpaid dues

A significant controversy has emerged between former Pakistan men’s red-ball cricket head coach Jason Gillespie and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) concerning allegations of unpaid salary following Gillespie’s abrupt departure in December 2024.

Jason Gillespie lashes out at PCB over unpaid dues

Gillespie, who took on the role in April 2024, claims the PCB still owes him remuneration for his nine-month tenure. The PCB, however, has vehemently denied these assertions, counter-alleging that Gillespie breached his contract and is in fact liable to pay the board.  The dispute became public after Gillespie spoke to a local sports platform GeoSuper, expressing his disappointment over the situation. “I’m still waiting to be paid for the work I did. It’s a bit disappointing, but I’m hopeful this will be resolved soon,” Gillespie stated, emphasizing that despite the financial disagreement, he holds no ill will towards Pakistan cricket. Reports indicate that Gillespie’s agent has contacted the PCB’s HR department to seek clearance of the outstanding amount.

Gillespie, a former Australian fast bowler, resigned just eight months into his role, reportedly citing differences with the board and an untenable environment. He has been critical of the PCB’s internal politics and the conduct of interim head coach Aaqib Javed since his departure.

PCB responds to Gillespie’s allegations

In a strong rebuttal, the PCB dismissed Gillespie’s claims of unpaid dues as baseless. The board asserts that Gillespie’s sudden resignation, without serving the mandatory four-month notice period stipulated in his contract, constitutes a clear breach of the agreement.

A PCB spokesperson clarified the board’s position to Cricket Pakistan: “If the PCB had terminated Gillespie’s services, we would have been liable to pay him four months’ salary. However, since he resigned without notice, he is required to pay the board four months’ salary instead. Therefore, his claim of unpaid dues is incorrect.” The spokesperson added that Gillespie’s agent had been informed that any pending payments would be contingent on Gillespie fulfilling his contractual obligations.

Gillespie’s tenure was reportedly marked by disagreements with the PCB hierarchy and internal team dynamics. His resignation came just ahead of Pakistan’s white-ball tour of South Africa in December 2024. Since then, Gillespie has openly discussed his dissatisfaction with the circumstances surrounding his departure and the PCB’s management.

The public disagreement has attracted considerable attention within the cricketing world. While Gillespie remains hopeful for a swift resolution, the PCB maintains its stance that the terms of the contract must be respected by both parties involved. The outcome of this contractual dispute remains awaited.
