The upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 Qualifier is set to be a landmark event in the growth of women’s cricket, and former Pakistan captain Sana Mir has shared her thoughts on its significance.

ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 qualifier

The Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 Qualifier is set to commence on April 9 in Pakistan, marking a pivotal moment in women’s cricket as six teams battle for the remaining two slots in the highly anticipated global tournament. With the Women’s Cricket World Cup scheduled to take place in India later in the year, this qualifier will be instrumental in determining which teams will join the elite competition.

The event will not only showcase the strength and depth of women’s cricket but also highlight the growing competitiveness among teams outside the traditional powerhouses of the sport. Hosted by Pakistan, this tournament will serve as a crucial stepping stone for emerging and developing nations looking to make their mark on the world stage.

Participating teams and format

The Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 Qualifier will feature six teams, consisting of four full member nations and two associate members. The teams competing for a spot in the World Cup are:

  • Pakistan (Hosts)
  • West Indies
  • Bangladesh
  • Ireland
  • Scotland
  • Thailand

The tournament will follow a round-robin format, where each team will play against every other team once. At the end of the group stage, the two highest-ranked teams will secure their places in the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, which will be an eight-team event held in India in September 2025. This qualification process is crucial as it provides an opportunity for rising teams like Scotland and Thailand to challenge more established cricketing nations and prove their mettle in the international arena.

Sana mir on the expansion of the ICC Women’s Championship

The Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 Qualifier represents a significant step in the expansion and development of women’s cricket worldwide. Former Pakistan captain and cricketing icon Sana Mir has welcomed the ICC’s decision to broaden the Women’s Championship and provide more teams with a chance to qualify for major events.

“One of the great things about the ICC Women’s Championship, which I benefited from hugely in my career, is that it has been expanded to 10 teams. I feel that plays a huge role, especially for countries like Bangladesh and Ireland now that they have been part of that,” Mir was quoted as saying by the ICC.

The inclusion of a more extensive qualification pathway ensures that more nations get to experience top-tier competition, ultimately leading to the overall growth of women’s cricket. Mir further emphasized the excitement that the Women’s Cricket World Cup has generated in recent year, She also highlighted the competitive nature of recent World Cups, where several matches went down to the last few overs, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats.

“It is a very exciting time in women’s cricket, and if we keep doing things right, there will be more than four or five teams that people want to see playing against each other. In the last World Cup, a lot of matches went down to the last couple of overs and that’s what you want to see as an audience. Women’s cricket is providing that,” Mir concluded.
