Ace Bangladesh National Cricket Team all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has faced a fresh legal setback as a court in Dhaka has ordered the seizure of his assets, intensifying his troubles linked to political and financial controversies.
The Bangladesh court announced the decision after a fraud case involving bounced cheques worth over $300,000, as well as scrutiny surrounding the former national cricket team captain’s association with ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Shakib, who was once a member of Parliament under Sheikh Hasina’s government, became the victim of the local public’s anger in political tensions after the government was demolished in a student-led uprising in the country last year.

Public outrage grew as Shakib was linked to allegations of a violent crackdown on demonstrators. He was among dozens facing murder investigations for a deadly police crackdown on protesters during the uprising.
However, the veteran all-rounder escaped from the formal charges over those allegations. But Shakib is currently facing fraud charges for alleged bounced checks worth over $300,000.
Shakib Al Hasan faces fresh legal blow as court orders asset seizure
As reported by AFP, a Dhaka magistrate issued the asset seizure order on Monday, just months after an arrest warrant was issued in January 2025.
Authorities have not revealed more details of the properties to be seized, but the decision is escalating pressure on Shakib amid ongoing investigations.
Shakib has not returned to Bangladesh since the political upheaval last year, and at that time, he had been in Canada’s domestic T20 league. He is one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated cricketers and has been a pillar of the national team for over a decade.

The ace all-rounder represented Bangladesh in 71 Tests, 247 ODIs, and 129 T20Is, taking 712 wickets and amassing over 14500 runs in international cricket. However, with legal battles mounting and uncertainty over his return to Bangladesh, Shakib’s career is now in crisis.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh all-rounder has expressed his frustration over being left out of the ODI squad for the recent ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Shakib blamed a lack of clear communication with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for the entire situation.
Shakib Al Hasan’s challenges began in September 2024 when his bowling action was reported during a County Championship match while playing for Surrey against Somerset.
After an independent assessment, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) ruled his action illegal, and he was immediately banned from bowling.

Well, Shakib was determined to return to action, so he worked on modifying his actions and went through multiple reassessments. But his first two attempts—one in England and another in India—did not meet the required standards.
Despite these setbacks, the former Bangladesh skipper continued working on his technique and finally passed the test in his most recent evaluation, so he is now eligible to bowl again.
Shakib Al Hasan was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz, “Look, I don’t have any complaints, but if the communication was better in that case, I would have been happier.”
