Indian Premier League (IPL) has always been a stage for thrilling cricket, and the 2025 season is no exception. In the 14th match of the IPL 2025, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) faced off against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The match began with GT winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, inviting RCB to set a target. This decision set the stage for an electrifying innings from RCB, particularly from their explosive opener, Phil Salt.

GT’s decision to bowl first was likely influenced by the dew factor that often affects the second innings at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. However, RCB’s batting line-up, bolstered by the inclusion of Salt, was well-equipped to handle the challenge. Salt, known for his aggressive batting style, was ready to take on GT’s bowling attack from the outset.

Phil Salt’s humongous six stuns Mohammed Siraj

The highlight of RCB’s innings came when Salt faced Mohammed Siraj in the fourth over. Siraj, known for his pace and aggression, bowled a short-pitched delivery at 143.6 km/h, aiming to unsettle Salt. However, Salt was prepared for the challenge. He telegraphed the short ball, opening up his stance early to unleash a powerful swing of his bat. The ball soared over cow corner, traveling an astonishing 105 meters before landing on the roof of the stadium. This colossal six not only sent the crowd into a frenzy but also marked a turning point in RCB’s innings, setting the tone for a high-scoring match.

Salt’s ability to anticipate and execute such a shot is a testament to his skill and experience. By opening up his stance early, he was able to generate immense power, leveraging the pace of the ball to his advantage. The shot was a masterclass in timing and technique, showcasing Salt’s ability to dominate even the fastest bowlers in the game.

Despite being hit for a massive six, Siraj showed resilience and determination to bounce back. In his next ball, he managed to get Salt out, dismissing him with a cleverly bowled delivery that caught Salt off guard. This wicket was crucial for GT, as it not only broke RCB’s momentum but also gave GT a chance to restrict their opponents to a manageable total. Siraj’s ability to respond under pressure is a hallmark of his bowling, and this comeback was a testament to his skill and experience.

RCB’s batting collapse against GT

Following Salt’s dismissal, RCB faced a batting collapse that significantly impacted their innings. The team lost wickets at regular intervals, with Virat Kohli being caught by Prasidh Krishna off Arshad Khan in the second over, and Devdutt Padikkal falling to Siraj in the third over. Rajat Patidar, the captain, was trapped lbw by Ishant Sharma in the seventh over, leaving RCB struggling at 42/4. This collapse was a stark contrast to their initial aggressive start, highlighting the challenges RCB faced in maintaining momentum throughout their innings.

Recovery and stabilization

Despite the collapse, RCB managed to stabilize their innings thanks to the efforts of Liam Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma. Livingstone’s gritty knock of 54 off 40 balls, while Jitesh’s  33 off 21, including four fours and a six played a crucial role. Tim David‘s finishing touches with a quick cameo helped RCB reach 169/8 in their 20 overs, setting a competitive total for the bowlers to fight.
