New Delhi: BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has formally urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to initiate ‘Privilege Proceedings’ against Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition. Dubey, in a letter to the Speaker, charged Gandhi with the misuse of parliamentary privilege by introducing untrue facts and false claims in his speech in the Lok Sabha recently.
Rahul Gandhi’s Controversial Speech
At his speech, Rahul Gandhi raised several concerns involving the Indian governments’ policy, foreign affairs, as well as national security issues. His remarks particularly stirred controversy over claims related to:
- Mobile phone manufacturing in India
- Chinese territorial incursions
Deficiency on the inaugural of former US President Donal Trump by the Indian government.
- Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections
- The appointment of Election Commissioners
- The demand for a caste-based census
Dubey’s Allegations Against Rahul Gandhi
Dubey’s letter to the Speaker in particular castigated Gandhi’s remarks, claiming that he “shamelessly fabricated historical and factual issues in order to deride India and damage its standing in the world.
The BJP MP also alleged that Gandhi had misconstrued Article 105 of the Indian Constitution, which provides MPs with free speech in Parliament. Dubey argued that Gandhi falsely assumes that this freedom to the “unbridled parliamentarianism” leads to anarchy in the House.
“My instant notice of Breach of Privilege is regarding the habitual and blatant lies and vilification campaign of Shri Rahul Gandhi, misusing the sacred forum of our Parliament on an utterly false and imaginary notion that he, as an MP, has an inherent right to speak whatever he likes,” Dubey wrote.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Responds
And complementing the BJP’s condemnation, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also condemned Gandhi’s comments on the India-China border crisis. Singh countered Gandhi’s assertions as “false allegations” and justified the stance of the government.
The sayings attributed to Army Chief through Shri Rahul Gandhi were never uttered by him in any form of the past, present, or future. It is deeply regrettable that Shri Rahul Gandhi indulges in irresponsible politics on matters of national security, Singh stated.
China Border Dispute: Historical Context
Singh further clarified that the Army Chief’s comments referred only to routine patrolling disturbances, not Chinese intrusion. He further noted that any Indian territory that China was occupying was because of historical disputes, in particular:.
The 1962 Indo-China War when China captured vast areas of Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.
The 1963 Pakistan-China arrangement in which Pakistan transferred to China Shaksgam Valley (concerns area of Jammu and Kashmir).
Singh reported that such events happened “under Congress rule,” and asked Gandhi to “reflect on this stage of history” before making political charges.
Political Fallout and Next Steps
The political clash between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress is intensifying and the Parliament’s Privilege Committee is set to review Dubey’s complaint. If convicted of a breach of privilege Rahul Gandhi may incur disciplinary action, especially, suspension from Parliament.
In the meantime, Congress leaders have rejected the BJP’s charges, asserting that the government is resorting to discouraging the opposition stands. Gandhi’s followers maintain that he only pointed to some of the national problems, and he revealed the government’s shortcomings.
The Speaker’s response and possible Privilege Committee hearings will determine the next course of action, shaping the political battle ahead of the upcoming elections.
